Goldendale Fast Facts

  • Despite Goldendale’s comparatively modest population of fewer than 3,500 residents, we’re actually the largest city in Klickitat County and the town serves as the county seat.
  • An interesting bit of Goldendale trivia: Astronomer Heber Curtis and William Wallace Campbell (director of the famous Lick Observatory in San Jose) traveled to Goldendale on June 9, 1918, to witness a rare total eclipse. The duo came to our town to validate their hypothesis that the sun’s gravitational pull on the rays of the stars when passing the sun distorts the stars placement. Due to not having the right equipment, they were unable to validate this hypothesis. However, one year later, Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and a group of British astronomers validated Curtis and Campbell’s hypothesis.
